Discipline Will Take You Further Than Motivation

Choose discipline over motivation.

For years, I have talked about my dreams over and over again yet, many of them have never been achieved. Its all because I rely on motivation more than discipline. The sucky thing about motivation is its fleeting. So what happens when that motivation disappears?

In my situation, my dreams remain just that….dreams.

However, I am going to get that together. I can’t be 90 years old, feeling like I missed out because I didn’t give a 110%.

Don’t get me wrong, I am not a complete flop. There are some goals I have achieved, but looking at my track record there are more goals unfulfilled than fulfilled. And its not because those dreams just waned away, but because I didn’t put in enough work to achieve them. When the fun of starting a new goal went away, that’s where I stopped.

So we are going back to the drawing board to bring them to reality. From experience, I know focusing on too many goals at once is a no-go so lets prioritize them. This will help prevent burnout and help build the habit needed to achieve these goals.

  1. Fitness (Lose 20 pounds)
  2. Upskilling Career (Learn SQL, Excel, and a visualization tool)
  3. Investing in my Appearance (Grow my hair, improve my style)
  4. Successful Blog (Consistently post on my blog once a week)
  5. Successful Business (Idea pending)
  6. Financial Stability (Ongoing; Get on track with my retirement)

Since, I am starting with fitness, let’s identify the end goal and the plan to get there.

My goal: To lose 20 pounds by May and build the habit of exercising daily.

To achieve this, I will start by:

  • Walking 10,000 steps every day for two weeks.
  • Next two weeks, add Pilates twice a week
  • For the next four weeks, incorporate strength training twice a week
